Hostesses and past hostesses
Every now and then, I hear someone at my table mention that they used to work at a restaurant. Maybe they think that mentioning it will make me give them better service to get a better tip, I dont know. To me, I treat you worse. If you have to mention that to me, you arent really someone that worked in a restaurant.
Again, weed girl was hosting tonight. I was under her will. I hated it. Immediately she seats me a table of 5, a table of 3 and a table of 4. Van did not have a table while one of the other servers that walked in recieved one table. I try to ask her the reasoning behind this but she had no idea what I was talking about. Every party over 4 that walks in, she has to ask a manager what to do with it. We have part sections for a reason! She seats a party of 7 and asks me to take it. I explain T has no tables and that she would be happy to take it. So she seats T a party of 11 and a 2 top immediately after it. My brain hurts.
All of the tables weed girl sat her, minus the two top, were in other sections than hers. So when I party of 6 that is in her section comes around, T is too busy to take it and doesnt even notice that she has a table on the other side of the restaurant. weed girl asks me why I wasnt taking it. *sigh*
She topped off her night by giving van a table right as he was getting cut so he could go home. By the rotation, another section should have gotten it. I feel bad for Van, we both had been there since 10am. Weed girl just doesnt understand. It could partly be the weed, but also that she has never seen things through the eyes of a waiter.
Tonight, I had an old hostess in my section. She had a guy friend with her, I gave them my discount. My discount is basically free soft drinks and anything that I get myself and dont have to go through a kitchen for. On average, I can save someone at least $10. At the end of their meal, they paid the bill in cash. 20% on a fairly small bill for having steaks/shrimp/fajitas. Im not complaining. well, I am. Usually, the unwritten code is that you tip 20% on the original bill. Also, 20% to me is a base minimum tip from someone who is/was an employee. Again, she just never saw it through the eyes of a waiter, she never knew what even the difference between 20% on a discounted check and 20% on the original bill is.
Moral: Just because you worked in a restaurant doesnt mean you know how to tip. If you used to be a waiter, now thats a different world.
