Gratuity and Wrong food

Heres a double post. Ive probably already ranted about gratuity so ill leave this part short.

Gratuity is added onto checks to prevent waiters from getting swindled out of a tip in a large party. Allegedly it is added in so its easier to calculate 15%. Its really there as a minimum tip. I had a table of 17 last night and they left me gratuity, to the penny. Literally this guy brought out his change purse (yes he had a change purse), to pay for his bill. I could have made at least 20% if I had 4 tables of about 4 people rather than take this party all at once. A large group is MORE work than the equivalent of smaller tables. I wont explain it, if you cant figure it out, dont come to my restaurant. If it is more work, shouldnt I get a bigger tip? I can understand if I royally messed up, but if everything is perfect, have a heart. Tip more than 15%!!!

Wrong food:
I had a lady this morning who ordered a salmon and requested it be well done. First of all, no restaurant aside from a sushi place should be cooking salmon anything but well done. it isnt steak. You dont ask for your chicken well done. Anyway, she took a few bites then complained that it tasted bad. Of course it isnt going to taste the best youve ever had, we are not a sea food house. I was nice and suggested a few other things she could get or I could make her a fresh salmon at the risk of it coming out the same way. She got the cheapest thing she could think of. She also only left me $0.76 as a tip. I understand that her tab was only $6, but that is a horrible tip.

It wasnt my fault the salmon didnt taste the way she wanted. Was I supposed to warn her? I dont know, maybe thats the way she tips. He even mentioned that it wasnt my fault that the salmon didnt taste good. Then WHY did I make less than a dollar?! I know several people that will not tip below a certain amount. I like the $3 rule. I wont tip anything less than $3 unless the person was REALLY bad, regardless of my check size. After all, you do take up a table for a usual amount of time. Grr!!

Moral: Gratuity == minimum tip

Moral #2: I dont care if it is 15%, a tip less than a dollar is an insult. Especially if I gave you the best service to my ability.

Bitch!

I don't mean to be a dick, but you got 15% from the group. What are you complaining about?

What if they thought your service merited a 15% tip? What if they thought you did a good job but not a spectacular job as you think.

From reading waiter/server blogs, every waiter thinks they're the greatest thing to ever grace a restaurant and that their skills are amazing and are SHOCKED when some moron customer even dare tip them a "paltry" 15%.

Waiters always bitch about how tipping gives customers some ability to voice their pleasure/displeasure with the service of a restaurant, but more often then not, waiters constantly complain as though they're doing perfect jobs every single time.

Is 15% really that low of tip?

I often eat out alone, and I have a five dollar minimum tip "rule." I have only once left less than that and the service was miserable and rude. (I did leave 15% in that instance, and it was still well over $1.)

I also have a $5 minimum tip rule, unless the service was really bad. In that case I still leave more than $2. Just because I order something cheap, doesn't mean the waiter didn't have to do the same amount of work if I had ordered the most expensive item on the menu.

The quality of the service really has no influence on how I tip. I think it's an obsolete myth. You'll get 15-20% no matter what (unless you're just the worst waiter ever and you insult me while being inept) so don't bother trying to chat me up or brighten my day.

If you always leave the same amount every time. why go out and eat at a sit down restaurant. Isnt the point of going out so that you dont have to do everything? If you pay tips like its part of your bill, dont eat out. Im there for a reason.

No you're not. You're there to take the order, drop off the food and present the bill. If I want entertainment I'll buy a ticket to a show. It's not my job to reward or punish you for the quality of your work but, sadly, management probably doesn't think it's their job either.

I think you may be in the wrong line of work.

Actually, Salmon should not always be well done. It should rarely to NEVER be well done. It ruins the fish...particularly if it is wild salmon which has less fat and dries out if you try to cook it all the way.
